Chapter Seventeen
The requirement to go to church didnât seem like much of a big deal, until I had to wake early for it.
Elliotâs idea of a polite way to wake me that morning was simply to take my arm and pull. Carefully, sure, but that didnât change the fact that I had been deep asleep.
I woke in a fit, slapping wildly at the offending monster. My mind hadnât been given any chance to catch up. He didnât give my mind time to process. For all I knew, he could have been a monster.
So, I bit him.
It wasnât hard. Well, not really. My teeth certainly left a mark, but not enough to draw blood. That alone had to mean something.
He didnât agree.
His first instinct was to slap me.
The sound struck me before his hand, but the moment the stinging recognition hit me, my earlier surprise was immediately replaced by fury.
âYou hit me!â I yelled, hand flying straight to my cheek. âDonât do that!â I punched him in the arm and lay back in bed.
âWell, you bit me!â He rubbed the bite mark hard enough that the friction had to hurt.
The sun wasnât fully up in the sky. Dull light peeked through the window, but not even enough for the birds to begin saying much of anything. One made its own squawking in the distance, but he certainly didnât count.
âYou have to get up, dadgummit.â He pulled on my arm again, this time hard enough that my whole body moved to the edge of the mattress.
âIâll get up when Iâm damn ready to!â I pulled back with all my might and tried to wrap my body in the quilt. He simply yanked on the covers, effectively pulling them completely off my body. Thankfully, I didnât toss and turn much, meaning my nightgown stayed where I wanted it during the night.
âYou bastard! Give that back!â I shouted, leaning to the end of the bed to grab the blanket. Before my fingers got close, he scooped me up like a doll. âLet me go! You . . . You . . .â Every bad name I could think of swirled through my head so fast, I couldnât pin one down.
âElliot! Elizabeth! Stop your bickering immediately and get ready! Donât make me tell you again,â Newton shouted from his inevitable spot downstairs.
It worked. Elliot plopped me down, and we both went our separate ways to be grouchy and get dressed in peace. Simple, as though our squabble had never existed. Like siblings.
I missed my own personal vat of coffee that Iâd had in my apartment back home. I would easily have downed an entire pot before my eyes had fully opened.
Instead, I was handed a sad sandwich when I got downstairs. I was dressed in a somewhat nice, dark brown dress, my hair pulled back into the best bun attempt I could make. Since no one said anything about my choice of attire, I figured I had done it correctly.
Wordlessly, we all took our depressing breakfast and went to the wagon.
